Memo to: The Weather.

Screw you. Screw you right in the butt. Hi, Friday night? Rain. Saturday? Rain. Sunday? Rain. Monday? Warm and sunny. Why? Dear God, why? I am trapped in cube-land, staring out the huge picture window at an idyllic blue sky, complete with fluffy clouds. Weather, I cannot have fun outside on the weekend when it's cold and pissing down rain. I also cannot have fun outside today when you're being all nice because I HAVE A JOB. INSIDE. I can't even look at you right now. Please just go.

Really, despite the weather, my weekend was fine. Some hanging out with friends, a little shopping, a little cleaning, a lot of time spent at the gym. Also, we rented Catch Me If You Can which was really interesting. It's the true story of Frank Abagnale Jr., who, as a teenager, forged checks all over the world and successfully passed himself off as an airline pilot, a lawyer and a doctor. Fascinating guy. He now works for the FBI as a forgery expert.

Something I Like.

I went to the library today to pick up a couple of my reading list books ('My Antonia' and 'The Blood Doctor') and as I did the self-check out (a very cool invention), I thought about how freaking cool the library is. Any damn person with an address can waltz in, pick out a stack of books (or tapes/CDs/videos) they want to read and just walk out with them; leaving, as payment, a breezy promise to return them in a few weeks. Cool, right?

It's staggering, really, that this system works at all. I've always been of the opinion that books should be readily accessible for everyone to enjoy and I worry that eventually lending libraries will become a thing of the past. I know people are depending on the Internet more and more for research (do kids even go to the library for research anymore?) and with heavy discounts from Amazon.com and Half.com, books have become more affordable.

But here's the thing- I cannot afford to buy every book I want to read, not even close. Even if I could afford it, I don't even like every book I check out, so why would I want to own it? How would I have found some of my very favorite older books, that I plucked from the stacks, at random? And how would I find the obscure, out-of-print books I loved as a kid? I can go to my local branch and find them still there. Sometimes, I can even walk to the exact spot on the shelf where I remember it being and it's still there. I love that. Support your local library, kids! We're lucky to have them.

Something I Hate.

Hot new trend in loan center desk flair- Beta fish planters. Basically, it's a Beta fish in a vase with a plant plopped on top. It's horrible. Horrible! Tons of people here have them and nobody seems bothered by the poor tortured fish. Apparently if it's "pretty", fish can suffer. This really bothers me. the whole Beta fish in the tiny, tiny bowl bothers me. Who's idea was this?

Aw damn.

I got an email from AB (who's journal I read) about her friends Allison and Chris, who lost their apartment (and everything in it, including their dog Murphy) to a fire on Thursday. For information on how to help them go here: http://www.ackrite.org/. Man, I cannot even imagine. What a nightmare.
